Chief Timothy P. Hayden, Chief of Police
Chief Hayden is a 26 year law enforcement veteran rising through the ranks to his current position as Chief of Police of the Addison Police Department. He began his career in March of 1978 as a Patrol Officer in the Lombard Police Department. He came to the Addison Police Department in November of 1978 working patrol until 1981. He was assigned as a Criminal & Juvenile Investigator and served in that capacity for the next 6 years. In 1987 he was promoted to Sergeant and moved quickly on to the position of Patrol Division Commander. In May of 1990 he was appointed as Deputy Chief of Police in charge of the Field Services Division. His career cumulated in his recent appointment to Chief of Police.
In addition to an outstanding career in law enforcement, Chief Hayden adds numerous educational credits to his profession. He earned six Masters Credits from the University of Virginia and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the National College of Education. Chief Hayden is a graduate of the 170th Session of the FBI National Academy as well as a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, and Supervision of Police Personnel. Chief Hayden is a member of numerous professional organizations focused on law enforcement.
Chief Hayden oversees the day-to-day operation of the Department of 115 police personnel, 66 of which are sworn police officers. His leadership style is best described as management by teamwork wherein he believes in empowering staff to achieve successes by giving them opportunities to perform to their own level of expertise. He has a clear vision for the Department in maintaining its strength and building relationships in the community. The Addison Police Department is honored to have received its accreditation for the second time and maintains the high standards as set by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The future is bright for the Addison Police Department because we have a Department of knowledgeable and dedicated personnel, as well as a rich history of successful programs. |

Michael Simo, Deputy
Chief of Police, Field Services Division
Deputy Chief Simo has been with the police department for 27
years. He had been assigned to the patrol and detective
divisions before being promoted to sergeant in 1999. He has an
Associates Degree in Law Enforcement, and a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Management. He attended the School of Police Staff and
Command at the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety
in 2000. As Sergeant, he supervised various patrol shifts, the
Traffic Unit, the Gang Tactical Unit, and oversaw fleet
management. In 2005, he was promoted to Watch Commander. In
2006, he was promoted to Deputy Chief. |

Bill Babyar,
Deputy Chief of Police, Support Services Division
Deputy Chief Bill Babyar has been a member of the Addison Police
Department since 1981. He has worked his way through the ranks
of the department, serving as a patrol officer, detective,
patrol sergeant, patrol commander, and deputy chief. Bill holds
a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from National Louis
University, and is a graduate of the School of Police, Staff,
and Command at Northwestern University. Bill is also a graduate
of the 220th session of the FBI National Law Enforcement
Academy. |

Karen Miller,
Watch Commander
Hired as a police officer for the Village of Addison in 1985,
Cmdr. Miller was assigned to the patrol division unit until 1993, when she became a full-time D.A.R.E. / Crime Prevention Officer for the department.
In 2001, she was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and assigned to Planning, Research, Development, and Grants. Karen also
became the CALEA Accreditation Manager for the department and supervisor of the Crime Prevention and D.A.R.E. Unit and the Fitness Program.
In 2005, she was transferred to the Traffic Unit as
Supervisor. Karen continues to oversee both of the department’s
resource centers, supervises the Crime Prevention and D.A.R.E.
Sections and the department’s Fitness Program.
In 2006, she was promoted to Watch Commander.
Cmdr. Miller is a graduate of the Northwestern University's
School of Police Staff and Command. In 2006, she graduated from
the FBI National Academy Session #226.
Cmdr. Miller oversees the department's community programs
including the D.A.R.E. Program, the School Based Resource
Center, the Henry Hyde Resource Center, Neighborhood Watch and
all the programming through the Crime Prevention Section.
She also is responsible for the Bike Patrol Unit, the
Community Response Unit and the Crime Free Multi-Housing
Program.

Mark VanStedum,
Watch Commander
Cmdr. Mark VanStedum began his career with the Addison Police Department in 1987. His first assignment was in the Patrol Division as a Patrolman. His second assignment was to the Detective Division, where he served from 1991 to 2002.
As Sergeant he was the supervisor in charge of the Criminal Investigations
Section and Gang/Tactical Unit. In 2006, he was promoted
to Watch Commander.
Cmdr. VanStedum has an Associates Degree in Police Science and is a graduate of the Police Training Institute, in Champaign, IL. He was a long time member of the West Suburban Detectives Association, the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigations Association. He is currently a Trustee with the Midwest Homicide Investigations Association.
During his career with the Addison Police Department, Sergeant VanStedum has received numerous letters of commendation, as well as numerous awards from the Addison Merit Review Board. Sergeant VanStedum was employee of the year in 1999. |

Donald Sommers, Director of Communications
Don began his career with the Addison Police Department on June 12, 1973, when he was hired part-time as a Police Cadet; working the radio, answering telephones, and handling walk-in traffic in the radio room of the old Village Hall/Police Department.
After passing the police tests, Don was hired as a police officer on May 12, 1973. As a patrol officer he worked as an Evidence Technician, Breathalizer Operator, and a Field Training Officer in addition to his regular patrol duties. He received several Merit Review Awards for his contributions on various cases during this period of his career; including one of the few officers to be involved in a shooting in 1978.
On March 6, 1984 Don was promoted to the rank of Sergeant; continuing to work in the patrol division, on rotating shifts with rotating days off. He attended the Staff and Command administrative training course at Northwestern University’s Traffic Institute.
On September 21, 1991 Don was reassigned from a patrol supervisor to become the Criminal Investigations Section Supervisor. During his tenure in Investigations he supervised and participated in a multitude of major cases and multi-jurisdictional task forces, including the successful investigation of nine murder cases. He also was instrumental in joining the ILEIN and MOCIC intelligence organizations, and became an officer and then president of the Midwest Homicide Investigators Association. He taught at most of the prior Citizens Police Academies, and Senior Citizens Police Academies.
On November 26, 2001 Don retired his commission as a sworn officer, after 28 years of service. On November 27, 2001 Don accepted the civilian position of Communications Director, where he currently works. |

Larry Stoll, Director of Records
Larry Stoll began his career with the Village of Addison Police Department in May 1978. During his 20 years of service, he has served as a Patrol Officer, a Police Counselor at Addison Trail High School, a Patrol Sergeant, Administrative Commander
and
Deputy Chief.
Deputy Chief Stoll was instrumental in bringing the school based resource center concept to the Village of Addison by assisting in the formation of the first school based resource center in DuPage County. He serves on the board of directors for the center as Vice Chairman.
Deputy Chief Stoll received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Roosevelt University and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command. In 1998, he became a graduate of the 194th session of the FBI’s National Law Enforcement Academy, a prestigious training program for command personnel involved in the administration of police agencies. He received his Masters Degree in Criminal/Social Justice in 2001from Lewis University.

Doug
Olson, Sergeant
Sergeant Olson began his law enforcement career in 1990 after
serving a four year active duty service enlistment as a Security
Police Officer in the United States Air Force. He has an
Associates Degree from College of DuPage, and a Bachelors Degree
in Management from National-Louis University. He also is a
certified Crime Prevention Specialist and is trained in Crime
Prevention Through Environmental Design, (CPTED), principles
from the University of Louisville. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2007.
While a patrolman, Sergeant Olson was assigned to; patrol, the
Crime Prevention Section and Planning, Research and Development.
He also has the following specialties, Juvenile Officer,
Physical Fitness Instructor, I.P.M.B.A. Police Cyclist Officer,
CALEA Manager, D.A.R.E. Instructor, and a CPR/AED Instructor. |

Mike Tierney, Sergeant
Sergeant Tierney has been with the Addison Police Department
since 1982, having grown up in Addison. He has an
Associates Degree from College of DuPage, a Bachelors Degree
in Management from National-Louis University, and is currently
pursuing a Masters Degree in Management from Benedictine
University.He was the first
D.A.R.E. officer in the Village of Addison and one of the first
50 to teach it in the State, before piloting the High School
D.A.R.E. program. He served on the Addison Substance
Responsibility Commission and is a current member of the Addison
Police Pension Board, since 1999. He has also previous
worked as Addison Trail High School's liaison officer, and been
a member of the Criminal Investigations Section. He is trained
as an Evidence Technician, Arson Investigator, Field Training
Officer, Youth Officer, Bicycle Patrol Officer and speaks
Spanish.
He was promoted to Sergeant in 2006. |

John Moffitt, Sergeant, Traffic Section
Sergeant Moffitt joined the Addison Police Department in 1988
after serving a four year active service enlistment as a
Security Police Officer in the United States Air Force.
While assigned as a patrolman, Sergeant Moffitt has served as a
Field Training Officer, Evidence Technician assigned to Major
Crimes Unit, Certified Arson Investigator, Juvenile Officer,
Physical Fitness Instructor, I.P.M.B.A. Police Cyclist Officer,
Gang Enforcement Specialist Officer and Certified Police
Instructor.
Sergeant Moffitt has maintained several additional duties as a
member of the Addison Police Departments Safety Review
Committee, Physical Fitness Committee and Honor Guard Unit.
In 1999 Sergeant Moffitt was assigned to the Traffic Unit as a
Crash Investigator and Second Division Vehicle Enforcement
Officer after obtaining certification through Northwestern
University Traffic Institute.
In May of 2005 he was promoted to Sergeant assigned to the
Patrol Division and Major Crimes Evidence Technician Supervisor.
He is currently assigned as the Supervisor of the Bike Unit and
serves as a Patrol/Field Training Supervisor. |

Steve Ruggiero, Sergeant,
Crime Prevention/D.A.R.E.
Sergeant Ruggiero joined the Addison Police Department in 1989,
after serving six years on active duty in the United States Air
Force. While assigned as a patrolman, Sgt. Ruggiero served as an
Evidence Technician, Field Training Officer, and Firearms
Instructor. Since his promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 1998,
he has completed Northwestern University's School of Police
Staff and Command. Sgt. Ruggiero is currently assigned to the
Field Services Division, serving as a Patrol/Field Training
Supervisor. He is also the department rangemaster, responsible
for all firearms related training. |

Russ
Schecht, Sergeant
Sergeant Schecht started his Law Enforcement Career with the
Addison Police Department in 1980. He is a graduate of Western
Illinois University where he received a Bachelors Degree in Law
Enforcement Administration. In 1988 Sergeant Schecht started up
the first Gang Tactical Unit in DuPage County and stayed in the
unit for 16 years. He is a court certified expert in Street
Gangs and continues to instruct classes on Gang Identification
throughout the State. He is also an Instructor at the Suburban
Law Enforcement Academy.
Sergeant Schecht has also held the position of Evidence
Technician, Field Training Officer, Juvenile Officer, and is a
Hostage Negotiator. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2005 and is
assigned to the Patrol Division. |

Roger Saran,
Sergeant
Sergeant Saran began his law enforcement career in 1982. He is a
graduate of Western Illinois University where he received a
Bachelors Degree majoring in Law Enforcement Administration and
a minor in Business. He graduated with honors.
While assigned as a patrolman, Sergeant Saran has served as a
Field Training Officer, Evidence Technician assigned to the
Major Crime Unit, Certified Arson Investigator, Juvenile
Officer, Breathalyzer Operator, Crash Investigator, Second
Division Vehicle Enforcement Officer, and Second Division
Vehicle Inspector.
In September of 2007 he was promoted to Sergeant assigned to the
Patrol Division. He is assigned as second supervisor for
evidence technicians and second supervisor for major crashes.
