Home Fire Safety

While the Addison Fire Protection District teaches and encourages fire safety in the community, it is ultimately the homeowners’ responsibility to make sure the home is fire safe. Here are some things you can do to protect your family.

Install and Maintain Smoke Detectors

Most fatal house fires occur at night while people are asleep. Working smoke detectors cut the chance of your family dying in a house fire by more than 50 percent. State and local law requires a smoke detector within 15 feet of a bedroom and at least one detector on each level of your home. Be sure to test your detectors monthly and change the batteries annually.

Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors

It is wise to install a good carbon monoxide detector in your home. Be sure the installation is done according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Do not install a CO detector in a furnace room or kitchen. For help determining your needs, please call the Fire District at 630/628-3100.

Plan and Practice Your Escape

If you have a fire, your family must be prepared to get out fast. Everyone should know two ways out of each room. Decide on a meeting place outside where the family will gather. Practice this drill regularly, especially with children, so they will know exactly what to do in an emergency.

Practice Fire Safety

bulletNever store gasoline or other flammables inside your home. Store these liquids in proper containers, away from any ignition sources.
bulletTreat electricity with respect. If an electrical appliance isn't working properly, unplug it and have it repaired by a qualified repairman.
bulletNever leave cooking unattended.
bulletKeep clutter to a minimum. Besides being an eye sore, clutter attracts fire.
bulletFurnaces and flues should be inspected annually by a qualified professional.
